Euthanasia

A compassionate option for dogs and cats with terminal illnesses or chronic pain.

At Sechelt Animal Hospital, we are here to support you through the good and more especially, the hard times. Our prime concern is being by your side to help you through the difficult and painful decision of whether to euthanize your beloved pet. We want to ensure you feel supported in making the best decision possible for your pet and family. If you’d like to discuss your options please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team at 604-885-2309.

When should I consider euthanasia?

Only you know what’s best for you and your loved ones. We understand discussing euthanasia is never easy and if and when the time comes, our team will be here to help guide you through the process. Keeping in mind your pet’s unique health situation, some factors that may help you with this difficult decision are:

  • If they are experiencing chronic pain and whether or not their medication and treatments can continue to alleviate their pain
  • If they were diagnosed with a terminal disease
  • Their quality of life: if they can continue to eat or relieve themselves without experiencing prolonged pain or suffering

What happens during the procedure?

Our team will first walk you through the process of the procedure to let you know what will happen. Before the procedure, a sedative may be administered to keep your pet calm. During the procedure, our team will ensure the process is as painless and stress-free as possible. We will then administer the euthanasia medication which stops their organs from functioning, allowing them to peacefully go to sleep. If you would like to say goodbye before or after the procedure, our team will give you some alone time with your loved one.
