Vaccines for Kittens & Cats

A healthy outside starts from the inside. Vaccines help prepare your pet’s immune system so they can guard against specific viruses. With their defences in place, you can be sure your cat will be protected against some of the more common diseases that cats face. When should I get my kitten/cat vaccinated?

Kittens should get their first vaccines when they are 7-8 weeks old. Afterwards, they will need 2 sets of boosters at 12 weeks old and 16 weeks old. Until 10 days after their last booster, they are not considered protected, so they should be kept strictly indoors until then. After that, they should come back in for boosters every 1-3 years (depending on the vaccine). Which vaccines they get are dependent on their lifestyle and health needs, so talk to your veterinarian about what they recommend.

Which core vaccines do you recommend for my cat?

Core vaccinations are vaccines that should be given to all cats, as they help protect them against harmful common conditions such as:

• Rabies
• Feline panleukopenia 
• Feline calicivirus and rhinotracheitis
• Feline leukemia (only considered “core” for cats that will be going outside)

Does my indoor cat need to be vaccinated?

Even if your pet is a homebody, we strongly recommend that all cats are vaccinated. Parasites and infectious diseases have no borders and can still make their way inside your home through other pets or contaminated items. It’s better to be safe than sorry by providing them with the protection and care they need.
