How safe are X-rays for my pet?

Taking X-rays is a non-invasive way to give us a picture of what’s going on inside the body. They are very safe and your pet’s exposure to radiation is minimal. If your pet is anxious, or in any pain, we may need to sedate them to make sure they feel relaxed and comfortable.

What can X-rays help diagnose?

X-rays capture images of your pet’s bones and soft tissues which make them a great diagnostic tool for any underlying conditions your pet may be experiencing. They help us diagnose and monitor conditions such as:

  • Cysts and tumours
  • Broken bones
  • Pregnancy
  • Swallowed objects
  • Enlarged organs

When would my pet need an X-ray?

It can be difficult to know what’s going on inside your pet’s body as not all medical conditions are visible. After a physical exam, our veterinarians may recommend an X-ray to diagnose the cause of your pet’s pain or discomfort, so we can create the best treatment plan together to meet their unique needs.
